Opens and closes automatically by responding to changes in water levels on u/s side of dams & barrages.
Does not need any electrical power connection.
Eliminates need for round the clock monitoring of the water level during monsoons.
Ensures complete safety of dam / barrage enabling optimum storage of water in the lake.
Height of the gate supporting structure is significantly reduced.
Enables raising of storage capacities of all minor and medium tanks which were previously provided with ungated spillways without need for raising height of earthen bunds and without need for additional land acquisition as area under submergence during floods does not increase.
The profile of gate leaf closely follows the profile of streamline of flow above and below the gate in fully open position. This results in higher coefficient of discharge as compared to flat gate leaf of outflow regulating gate.
It is very useful where afflux caused by provision of gate on previously ungated Ogee spillways need to be kept to the minimum.
Normally outflow from spillway automatically adjusted to suit changes in inflow into the reservoir by the gates themselves. No human intervention is necessary. However it is possible to override the automatic regulation of gates by means of emergency hoisting system provided whenever so desired by human intervention.
