There arehundreds of Ungated Medium and Minor Irrigation Projects in India, which were constructed with ungated spillways. These dams are designed for MWL condition, but store water only upto FRL. Due to this, every year precious water storage between MWL and FRL is being wasted.
In many instances, land has also been acquired upto a level halfway between FRL & MWL. If full Reservoir Level of these dams is raised upto MWL (or upto level between FRL & MWL), an additional storage of around 25% to 35% of live storage can be created in each such dam, at a very low cost & in a short time of 1 or 2 years. This additional storage can be used for irrigation, industrial or domestic purposes.
